Happy 2018, friends! I hope you’re having a wonderful year so far. Everywhere I go, I’m sensing a feeling of optimism about this year, and I’m definitely on board with that! A few days ago I spent some time praying, dreaming, planning, and setting goals for the upcoming year. While many people focus on health-related goals this time of year, most of my goals and dreams revolve around the home updates I’d love to complete in 2018! Can you relate?
Before we get too far into the new year, I thought it would be fun to share my top home updates from 2017 as well as some of my dream projects for the year to come.
Top 5 Home Updates of 2017
1. Painting everything white
The number one thing that changed the look and feel of our home in 2017 was painting all the walls and ceilings on our main level white. What a job this was, but it was so worth it! When I look back at photos of our SW Kilim Beige walls and ceilings from a year ago, it makes every trip up and down that step ladder worthwhile!
We used Benjamin Moore’s Simply White in some rooms and BM White Dove in others. Honestly, there isn’t a huge difference between the two shades, other than White Dove is slightly creamier, so we used it in the spaces where we wanted a bit more warmth. Here’s a post detailing how I chose the perfect white paint for our home.
2. Adding picture frame molding (also called panel molding or moulding)
The next thing we did that made a huge difference was adding molding to our living room, dining room, entryway, hallway, and the wall behind our bed in the master bedroom. I was really nervous about starting this project–in fact, I almost didn’t go through with it–but I’m so glad I did! Working with the Metrie company made all the difference. They have such beautiful, well-made products, and their website was amazingly helpful in finding inspiration and choosing a moulding style.

3. Patio refresh
Last spring’s patio refresh was one of my favorite home updates of the year, mainly because it came together in one weekend, rather than over several weeks like our other projects. As you can see from the cushions we had before, I went through a red phase a few years ago!
Since I believe in working with what you already have, I kept our existing furniture because it was still in good condition. I simply added new seat cushions and rugs, as well as lots of plants, to give our patio an entirely new look! You can read more about this project here.
4. Master bedroom updates
Last summer, I updated our master bedroom with luxurious Boll & Branch bedding and an amazing Agility Bed mattress. Both were game-changers– just the catalyst I needed to make our bedroom into the relaxing retreat I’d always dreamed of. A blue headboard and indigo rug completed the look. 5. Adding wood flooring
During most of the autumn my husband spent his weekends tearing out carpeting and adding wood flooring to our master bedroom, hallway, office, guest room and closets. Believe it or not–this project was his idea! While I happen to like carpeting in certain spaces, ours had become worn and outdated in the eight years we’ve lived in our home, and my husband was especially tired of it. Removing it and adding wood flooring made these spaces feel so much fresher and cleaner!
We went with koa, also called tiger wood, to match the existing wood floors in our living room and dining room. This is such a recent project that I haven’t written a post about it, but you can see the results in a few of my recent bedroom photos.
Before I move on to my dream projects for 2018, I have to give a HUGE amount of credit to my wonderful husband who painted all the ceilings and installed all of the molding and flooring by himself. He is incredibly talented, and I’m incredibly blessed and thankful to have his support, as well as his amazing carpentry skills, to rely on.
Looking ahead to 2018
The main project I’d love to complete this year is updating our kitchen. Replacing the granite countertops with white quartz or quartzite would make a huge difference. While I also love the beauty of white marble, we drink so much coffee and I cook so much that I have a feeling staining would be a big issue for us. In addition, I’d like to replace our backsplash with white subway tile or perhaps a unique tile design, like one of these beautifully unique kitchen backsplash ideas.
A gas stove, new lighting over our island, and new counter stools would complete the kitchen updates — for now. Would I love an all-white kitchen? Absolutely! All the blue, grey and two-toned kitchens we’re seeing everywhere lately are also favorites of mine. I share several of them in this post: Beautiful kitchen inspiration from Pinterest.
But, for now, I’d be happy to complete the updates I shared above, with the goal of painting or replacing our cabinets at some point in the future. And, who knows? I’ve been hearing that wood cabinets are making a comeback, so I may end up keeping them just the way they are!
That’s the thing about trends. If you wait long enough, everything comes back in style! I even saw a stack of bell-bottom jeans at the store the other day! That’s one trend I don’t plan on revisiting!
As far as the other projects on my 2018 wish list, most involve updating our spaces with new rugs, artwork and a few new pieces of furniture. I’d like to focus on our dining room, breakfast nook, and hearth room first, but I’ve noticed projects usually go more smoothly if I wait until I feel inspired, rather than forcing things to happen.
How about you? What home updates are on your list for 2018? I’d love to hear about them!
