How to Make Your Home Feel More Cozy

I love being at home–especially in winter when home feels like a cozy haven from the outside world.  To me, a cozy space is one that evokes a feeling of comfort and joy.  Cozy is an ambiance you can achieve in any room with a few simple touches.  They’re the little things that make your home feel more like “you.”  As long as I have the following items on hand–and plenty of coffee–I’m prepared for just about anything!

The first way to make your home feel more cozy is with throws–particularly when they’re made of soft fabrics, like cashmere and soft knits. I like to keep throw blankets all over the house so I can easily wrap up whenever I get chilly.  I also keep them in our guest rooms and master bedroom for impromptu naps!

Next, I love having flowers in the house all year round, but especially at this time of year when my winter-weary eyes need a dose of life!  Lately, I’ve had a thing for orchids, because they lend such a beautiful, elegant touch to any space.  Luckily, the grocery store I frequent marks them down all the time.  The one shown here was only $4.99, and all it needed was a little water to perk it up!

When I can’t find orchids or pretty greenery, I buy a small bunch of roses and make a tiny arrangement for my desk or nightstand.  Not only does it add a cozy touch, it never fails to brighten my day!

While I was writing this post, my daughter brought me these beautiful tulips! Another instant day-brightener!

In addition to flowers, there’s nothing like plants to make your home feel more cozy!  I have more plants than usual in our home right now because I brought most of my patio plants indoors last fall–including some very messy ferns!  They definitely keep me busy with all the watering and cleaning up, but I love the fresh, cozy vibe they bring to our home!  Just imagine how lifeless these spaces would look without any plants!

Candles are the perfect way to amp up the coziness of your home.  On a dreary day, there’s nothing like lighting a few candles to make your home feel warm and wonderful!  The other night, during a snow storm, our electricity went out for about 20 minutes.  I quickly lit a few candles and my husband and I sat in the semi-darkness, enjoying the flicker of candlelight.  It was so magical I was almost disappointed when the lights came back on!

Velvet Pillows

No surprise here!  I’m such a fan of the look and feel of velvet pillows, and right now I have them in almost every room in the house. Their luxurious, rich vibe is the perfect cozy touch for this time of year!

A cozy atmosphere doesn’t just come from the way a home looks, it can also be enhanced by certain scents.  Just think how cozy and welcoming your home feels when you’re baking bread or cookies!  My favorite way to enhance the atmosphere of our home is with essential oils.  I keep a diffuser running almost every day, and I try different blends on different days, depending on my mood.  Following are a few of my favorite diffuser blends to make our home feel more cozy:

2 drops clove + 3 drops wild orange
2 drops frankincense + 2 drops wild orange + 1 drop peppermint
3 drops wild orange + 2 drops cinnamon

As a bonus, these oils can support a healthy immune system as well!  See this post, 13 Beautiful Essential Oil Blends for Your Diffuser, if you’d like more ideas!

I hope this post gave you some ideas for making your own home feel a bit more cozy this winter.  Stay warm, friends!  xo jane

Such great ideas for coziness. Our new house has a very high ceiling and I’m finding cozy to be quite a challenge. It sure makes a difference! We did just put curtains up in the dining room (all the rest of the windows are open or have shutters). The curtains really helped more than I ever would have thought.
